World Breastfeeding Week

Mummahh

It amazes me that for the last 3 months I have sustained a little life.

All the food my little boy has needed to grow and thrive has been my breastmilk - how amazing. Breastfeeding has been easier this time, with my third child, but it hasn't "come naturally". I struggled for 11 weeks with my first child and nearly as long with my second child. Now with my third child it has been a lot easier and I had little discomfort, any problems I had seemed to clear up around the second week. This is great because, with 3 kids now, I really need everything to go smoothly.

I have breastfed all my children but I have to say that it is ultimately a woman's choice whether she breast feeds or bottle feeds. This is a very touchy subject and I know there are many people with passionate opions about both breast and bottle. I do not advocate either.  I have seen many friends who have been unable to breastfeed and the guilt they feel (or are sometimes made to feel!) I feel lucky that I am able to breastfeed my children.

The reason I have breastfeeding accessories available at Mummahh is because of my own experiences. Although I didn't get mastitis I suffered from engorgement and oversupply, bleeding and cracked nipples and trying to keep track of which side, what time?

There is no doubt that breastfeeding is good. I saw an article today on the benefits of breastfeeding within the first hour of birth:

Busy Mums Burning Calories

Amanda Duncan - Friday, July 09, 2010

Busy mums burning calories!

The following information supplied by Curves shows you that being a mum can burn some major calories.

Remember that when you sign up for our newsletter you get 1 free week membership for you and a friend at Curves.

Great news ladies! Even if you don’t get the thanks you deserve for all your hard work you do at home, at least you’re burning calories. The human body requires energy, measured in calories, just to maintain life, like digest food or sleep, but the more active a person is the more energy their body uses. Whether it’s taking care of the kids or taking care of the house, the things you need to get done burn calories and help manage weight.

Taking care of the kids

Getting little-ones dressed and fed throughout the day can wear you out. Sitting and kneeling while you’re getting kids into clothes and feeding them burns 211 calories. If you’re standing while you’re doing this then you’d burn 246 calories.  Cooking and preparing meals is another thing on a mums’ to-do list. For each hour of cooking, 176 calories are burned.

Once the kids are satisfied, pushing them in their strollers burns 176 calories, while carrying an infant requires 246 calories. Children love to be active so get involved in their games.  If they’re little and it’s only a moderate activity then you’ll burn 281 calories, or if you’re having fun during vigorous activity you’ll use 352 calories.

Maintaining order in the house

Cleaning can definitely make you break a sweat! It may not be the most enjoyable thing you do, but you can burn 176 calories for light effort, 246 calories for moderate effort, and 317 calories for vigorous cleaning. When you really get things done, such as scrubbing the floors on your hands and knees, you’re burning 387 calories.

If you decide to rearrange your furniture or do some spring cleaning, then you’ll be burning more calories than just average cleaning. Moving furniture burns 422 calories, carrying boxes around the house burns 492 calories, and carrying boxes upstairs burns 633 hours. Might be good motivation to finally get your house in order!

Keeping the yard tidy

Yard work doesn’t have to be reserved for dads. Many people enjoy gardening, which burns 352 calories, and doing the things you love are the best activities to participate in. Raking uses 281 calories, sweeping burns 281 calories, and mowing with a push mower expends 387 calories.

Convenient ways to increase activity

Try to find endeavors that sound exciting to keep active in ways you’ll enjoy. Used to really enjoy playing sports? It’s never too late to get back to playing them and most can be done in or around your home. Biking at a moderate effort burns 563 calories, dancing uses 317 calories, jogging requires 493 calories, running at an easy pace utilizes 563 calories, swimming leisurely burns 422 calories, and playing tennis uses up 493 calories. Walking is another way to enjoy the outdoors and the company of someone to walk with you while burning 246 calories at dog-walking pace. One last way to get engaged in a sport is to coach, and you’ll be burning 281

calories while helping out.

*End note: Calories estimates are for a 68 kg individual doing 1 hour of activity. Differences in calories burned for individuals can be due to weight, muscle mass, gender, and age.

My special new arrival

Amanda Duncan - Wednesday, May 19, 2010
It's a boy!

On May 7, 2010 we welcomed our third child! A beautiful boy, Lachlan.

Big brother Maxwell (5 years old) and big sister Jessica (3 years old)  were very excited about the birth of their baby brother. We wanted a surprise for this baby so we didn't find out if it was a boy or girl (like we had with our other 2 children), so I think the kids were happy to finally find out if it was a boy or a girl after nearly nine months of waiting!

This birth I have to admit I was nervous, I knew what I was in for having done it twice before and I wasn't looking forward to the pain! Max was induced and was a long labour complete with all drugs available including an epidural. Jessica however was a very fast water birth with nothing but gas.

I wanted to be ready for this birth with all the pain relief options I could find. I looked into the Mama TENS machine which I ended up using for the first phase of labour. I was extremely surprised at how effective it was at managing the contractions. These machines are great as you can use them at home once labour starts and on the way to hospital you can have pain relief - this was very appealing to me! For anyone looking for drug-free pain relief the Mama TENS is definitely worth checking out. These machines are available for hire from Pink or Blue - www.pinkorblue.com.au.

Once my waters broke I opted for the bath (and unfortunately had to remove the Mama TENS machine). After about an hour in the bath our beautiful Lachlan was born. I ended up having a very similar birth to my daughter Jessica, water birth with gas. The recovery is so much better for me (the less drugs I have). Everyone is different so you need to do what you are comfortable with!

Lachlan has been a very content baby so far and I feel blessed especially having 2 other children to care for.

Thank you to all of you for the lovely well wishes and gifts and I look forward to giving you updates on Lachlan's progress over the next few weeks. And also a very big thank you to my family especially my parents who were such a great help to me in the weeks before and after Lachlan's birth!

Amanda

Simplify & Organise!

Simplify & Organise and get back some “Me” time!

As a busy mum to two children (and one on the way in 3 weeks!!!) I am always looking for ways to organise my hectic life. Meal times seem to pop up and then the question -  “What are we going to have for dinner tonight?”. Then the dilemma of whether you have the required ingredients, not too mention is it healthy?

Mum e Assistant has come to the rescue with the Design Your Own Magnetic Family Meal Planning System.

This fantastic system is a great way to ensure your family eats well, saves money and saves time.

You are able to plan family dinners up to one month in advance! This not only ensures you are eating healthy nutritious meals but also helps you plan your shopping list. This has been the best aspect of the Magnetic Family Meal Planner for me – knowing exactly what I need when I go shopping. Buying the exact ingredients (not things I might use) has saved me time as well as money.

Another great thing about the Magnetic Family Meal Planner is the range of meal options. I think sometimes you get in a rut with dinners and have the same meals in rotation. I have added new meals which mean we are having a different meal every night for a full month!

The Magnetic Family Meal Planner is a handy A4 size that fits easily on any fridge and is very easy to use. The meals are colour coded and divided up into meat categories and meal categories.

The Design Your own Magnetic Meal Planning System includes:

  • • 71meal ideas (with more on the way)
  • • 6 take away options
  • • 3 blank write your own options
  • • a range of "kid friendly" meal options that the kids can help prepare.

Benefits of using the DYO Magnetic Family Meal Planner;

• Organised family meals
• Know what to shop for - saving time and money at the grocery store
• Plan your family meals on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis
• Prepare healthy nutritious meals
• Teach your children the importance of healthy nutrition
• Have fun planning and cooking healthy meals with your children
• Numerous recipe options, eat a different meal each night for weeks or months even!
• Use your own recipes or get inspiration from recipe sites

I love this planner as anything that makes life easier mums is a winner in my books! Mum e Assistant has some great products to help you simplify and organise.

The DYO Magnetic Family Meal Planner is a great time and money saver for all families and is only $39.95.

Calling all gorgeous babies & children

    Amanda Duncan - Thursday, March 04, 2010

Bonnie Babes Foundation is calling for gorgeous babies and children to be photographed for the fundraising coffee table book, Pride of the Nation.

Pride of the Nation is an annual coffee table book which celebrates new life and provides a snap shot of the next generation.

It is produce in support of Bonnie Babes Foundation, a non-profit volunteer based charity established for the health and well being of families. Sadly one in every four pregnancies ends in a loss from miscarriage and stillbirth. One in ten babies is born prematurely.

Bonnie Babes Foundation helps to save babies lives and counsel families through this extreme hardship. All proceeds the Foundation raises are for vital medical research projects and free telephone counselling services.

Pride of the Nation showcases the wonderful diversity of our Australian population, while also highlighting the natural beauty of every child as an individual.  Pride of the Nation is a unique way to celebrate the gift of children while supporting the essential services of Bonnie Babes Foundation.

Pride of the Nation is made possible by participating photographers, all volunteers, who waive their normal sitting fee to help the Bonnie Babes Foundation.  Instead, the $50 donation for the first child or $75 for all children from the same family goes directly to the Bonnie Babes Foundation upon registration.

All of the children photographed will be included in the next annual Pride of the Nation book displayed at Parliament House.  Like a Year Book, it will forever capture that fleeting and irreplaceable moment in a child’s life.

Pride of the Nation is open to children from newborn to 15 years. Don’t miss out, register your child now at www.prideofthenation.com.au or call 1300 693 686.
