Baby to Be - 4D Ultrasound

Amanda Duncan - Wednesday, October 06, 2010

The benefits of having an elective 4D ultrasound during your pregnancy are well documented and available pretty readily on the internet and in the relevant literature. My customers all come in having researched the topic thoroughly and decided that the experience is something they and their loved ones would like to share in.

While this information is a common theme amongst articles and blogs across the net, I would like to approach the topic from a different angle. What I would like to share with you today are the reasons I actually decided to get into this business and perform these scans and the benefits I get out of each and every interaction.

First let me introduce myself. My name is Elliott Rosenberg and I am the owner and operator of Baby to Be 4D Ultrasound Clinic based in Elwood, Melbourne. I am a senior radiographer with 10 years experience working in a variety of private and public hospitals across regional and metropolitan Melbourne and, most excitingly, my wife, Lisa, is also 21 weeks pregnant with our first baby.

Initially, we came up with the idea of the centre 4 years ago while on holiday on the Gold Coast. I still remember discussing the issue with Lisa in the pool, as we were looking for a way to utilise the technical and managerial skills we had acquired over the years to surround ourselves with happy, joyous people and find a way to enrich their lives in some way. Using the example of a lolly shop (who can be unhappy when buying lollies?) we came up with the idea of Baby to Be. The idea of dealing with pregnant women and their families and giving them a unique and special experience was, and still is incredibly appealing. Afterall, how can anybody be unhappy, stressed or distracted when being introduced to their newest family member for the first time.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed my time in the hospitals and recognised the importance of the job I was doing, but it’s difficult spending the majority of your day performing examinations for serious illnesses and diseases. Even when everything is normal, nobody is ever pleased to see you.

And so, Baby to Be was born. And so far it has met and exceeded my hopes and expectations on three levels.

Professionally, the business has allowed me to use the technical skills I have acquired during all those years at University and through constant on the job training. It has enabled me to use the techniques I had tested when I ran various rooms and radiology departments as well as the client interaction skills I learnt doing various retail jobs while studying at University. It has given me the opportunity to realise a lifelong dream of opening my own business and the fact I have Lisa along with me is the icing on the cake. I have also been delighted to find that my clients are not only excited and appreciative of the images and movies I can acquire for them of their baby, but are receptive to my questions and conversations regarding their pregnancies, families and lives in general.

Personally, Baby to Be has indeed allowed me to surround myself with happy and excited couples and families. It is always heart warming to see expectant parents cuddling on the couch as I undertake their scan, to hear the oohs and aahs of family members as they see a real baby yawning on the big screen and to see tears of joy in a mother’s eye upon their first introduction to their soon to be born baby. It’s always fun to see how the baby is behaving in the womb, whether sleeping peacefully, or kicking and moving about from one side of the womb to the other. Sometimes we see exhibitionists, putting on a show for mum and dad; other times, baby seems camera shy, strategically placing hands in front of faces, determined not to give any clues away. Whatever baby is doing, the feelings of love and excitement emanating from those in the scanning room make it seem more like a pleasure then a job, and it is indeed a pleasure to be in the position to provide them with this service.

Baby to Be has perhaps had the greatest impact on me as a Dad to Be. I have the opportunity to interact with many other people in the exact same situation as my family and myself. My clients and I get to compare notes, experiences, expectations and advice. Every time I get to witness their joy and excitement, it reflects my own joy and excitement. I get to a birds eye view of what is coming for Lisa and myself in the coming months as her pregnancy progresses. I get to see the mannerisms and features of the baby and compare them to the parents sitting next to me in the scanning room (and yes, you can definitely tell who the baby looks like and where they have picked up some of their mannerisms) and wonder who my own baby will be.

What has been surprising however is the emotional shift I have experienced since the pregnancy and commencement of the business.   Whilst I have always had a sensitive side, like many men, I liked to think of myself as having a stiff upper lip. But as our baby to be becomes more and more of a reality, I have been struck by how “mushy” I have become. I know with certainty that this baby will become the centre of my world and that I would do anything to make sure that it is forever happy, healthy and loved.
