Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2

Amanda Duncan - Tuesday, February 08, 2011

When I received the Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 DVD in the mail, to say my kids were excited would be an understatement. From the moment my son (6) and my daughter (4) knew I had this DVD in my possession there was a constant barrage of "Can we watch it now?". It was 2 weeks before school went back and the kids by this stage were pretty hard to amuse. I was praying this DVD would keep the kids happy and give me at least an hours peace.

So I popped the DVD in and hoped it would entertain my bored and somewhat rowdy children.

Right from the very beginning the kids were glued to the TV. It seems that Disney have the perfect formula for great family movies. It appealed to both my daughter and son and I have to say I even found it quite entertaining and a pleasant distraction from the jobs I was going to do!

From the creators of Beverly Hills Chihuahua it follows Papi and Chloe who get married and have a bunch of mischievous puppies who present one challenge after another. The story really focuses on how the puppies work together to help their human owners who get into spot of bother - Chihuahua Power!!

According to my 6 year old son it had just the right amount of "funny bits" and my 4 year old daughter loved all the puppies. The storyline wasn't too complex so the kids seemed to enjoy it all and didn't get half way through (like with some movies) and lose interest. It also had some great lessons for kids like sticking together through the good and bad and of course that you don't have to be big to be a hero.

Once the movie had finished the kids wanted to watch it again and they have watched it many times since!

I found Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 quite hilarious and picked up on some jokes that may have been lost on the kids. So it seems Disney have done it again, giving us another must own family movie.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua is rated G and is available 9 February 2011 on DVD $39.95 or Blu-ray Value Pack $49.95

Create a Relationship That Thrives When you have Kids

Amanda Duncan - Monday, January 24, 2011

Our guest blogger Susan Pearse from The Mind Gardener
with something just in time for
Valentines Day........

Create a Relationship That Thrives When you have Kids

What have you done to cultivate a great relationship with your partner today?

In the last month?  Or year? Or since having kids?

If you are like most of us mothers out there the answer is probably “not much!”

And it’s no wonder why – mouths to feed, routines to fulfil and things to organize.

They say that having children is one of the most challenging times for a relationship.  Countless studies show us that marital satisfaction declines for a period after having a baby.  But does all of the news have to be gloom and doom?  Can we have children and also have a fantastic relationship?

It is possible to not only survive the child rearing period together, but to strengthen your relationship and ensure it thrives.  This starts with changing the way you think about this time and making meaningful choices about each moment you have together. Cultivating your mind is the key to experiencing the joy of a fun, warm and lasting relationship.

Here are my top three tips on how to ensure your relationship thrives, taken from Mind Gardener’s The Great Relationships Guide:

Tip 1: Criticism Free Week

The added pressure of having children somehow makes criticism a more common activity in a relationship.  Regular criticism of your partner’s character using terms such as “you always” and “you never” is one of the predictors of divorce. Why not choose to have a criticism-free week?  Remove terms from your vocabulary and see what effect this has on the other person and your relationship.  You might just want to extend the practice beyond the week!

Tip 2: 7 Second Hug

The busy-ness of parenting causes many other things to go by the wayside.  One of the first things to be neglected is usually the time spent on physical affection.  Romantic touch triggers the release of oxytocin, which mothers know is a key hormone in the pair bonding process.  It also helps to reduce negative emotions.  Whenever you greet your partner, say goodbye or for no reason at all, hug them and hold the embrace for 7 seconds to allow both your brains to release oxytocin.

Tip 3: A Little Thank You

People get happier in relationships by focusing on the things that they have, and are grateful for, rather than the things that are missing in their relationship. Thank your partner for at least three things every day. It could be something small like handing you a towel to dry your child, or the big things like being in your life.

Start with these small exercises each day and see the difference they make. You’ll be amazed at what you get back in return.  Watch how they transform the way you think.  Because in relationships, thoughts really do count!

World Breastfeeding Week

Amanda Duncan - Monday, August 02, 2010

Mummahh

It amazes me that for the last 3 months I have sustained a little life.

All the food my little boy has needed to grow and thrive has been my breastmilk - how amazing. Breastfeeding has been easier this time, with my third child, but it hasn't "come naturally". I struggled for 11 weeks with my first child and nearly as long with my second child. Now with my third child it has been a lot easier and I had little discomfort, any problems I had seemed to clear up around the second week. This is great because, with 3 kids now, I really need everything to go smoothly.

I have breastfed all my children but I have to say that it is ultimately a woman's choice whether she breast feeds or bottle feeds. This is a very touchy subject and I know there are many people with passionate opions about both breast and bottle. I do not advocate either.  I have seen many friends who have been unable to breastfeed and the guilt they feel (or are sometimes made to feel!) I feel lucky that I am able to breastfeed my children.

The reason I have breastfeeding accessories available at Mummahh is because of my own experiences. Although I didn't get mastitis I suffered from engorgement and oversupply, bleeding and cracked nipples and trying to keep track of which side, what time?

There is no doubt that breastfeeding is good. I saw an article today on the benefits of breastfeeding within the first hour of birth:
