Brilliant book for anxious kids

Don’t Think About Purple Elephants is a brilliant book for anxious kids.

One of my children could be described as anxious. This is more apparent at bedtime, but it’s not the same as the usual avoiding bedtime shenanigans. They will worry about things they need to do tomorrow and things that they should have done today. I often think they get it from me. I can lay there for what seems like hours going through the coming days, working out a plan of what needs to be done and how I am going to do everything.

When I saw the new book Don’t Think About Purple Elephants by Susan Whelan I was keen to get my hands on a copy. Maybe this could help all my kids, in particular my little worrier.

The book is all about Sophie, a little girl who worries.

Sophie doesn’t worry when she is busy during the day, but at night when everything is quiet she will start to worry – about lots and lots of things. Sophie’s family try to help, but her mum comes up with an imaginative idea to take Sophie’s worries away.

Don’t Think About Purple Elephants is full of beautiful illustrations by Gwynneth Jones. This is a lovely book which has a subtle message for anxious kids and it makes a great bedtime story.

When I read this to my three kids I was happy to hear my ‘anxious’ child say that they ‘really related to that story’. Don’t Think About Purple Elephants (RRP $24.99) is released by one of my favourite publishers – Exisle Publishing and is available from www.purpleelephants.com.au and wherever good books are sold.
