Herbert Peabody and His Extraordinary Vegetable Patch.
This is a cute little book with a big message.
Melbourne-based author, Bianca C. Ross aims to tackle the age old ‘kids v’s vegetables’ in her new book series.
But there’s much more than this to Herbert Peabody.
After a career in food marketing author Bianca saw a disconnect between children and their understanding of where food comes from. Bianca made it her mission to change things and after much research Herbert Peabody was born!
Herbert Peabody and His Extraordinary Vegetable Patch is the first book in the Herbert Peabody series.
From my own research, eating well and being healthy is a lifestyle change. It’s important to me that my kids understand the benefits of good diet and exercise.
I totally agree with Bianca about the ‘disconnect’ thing. I bought a real coconut the other day. My husband cut the top off and the kids all tried coconut water and scooped out some flesh – they hated it. They couldn’t wrap their head around the fact that the (desiccated) coconut in the cupboard came from this ‘yucky’ nut. I said “this is the real thing”!
As you would expect, Herbert Peabody and His Extraordinary Vegetable Patch centres around farmer Herbert Peabody. Herbert gets a visit from his niece Clementine and nephew Digby who don’t seem to know much about vegetables. Throughout the book Herbie teaches them both the importance of vegies (along with some other adventures).
Herbert Peabody and His Extraordinary Vegetable Patch is suited to kids aged 4-9. My 9 year old son found this book easy to read and comprehend.
I am loving the illustrations by Tabitha Emma Bray (you can purchase printables at the Herbert Peabody website). I also liked that this book was hard cover (must be the old school print designer coming out in me!). There’s an official website where you can purchase a copy of Herbert Peabody and His Extraordinary Vegetable Patch, plus there’s a play and learn section with colour-ins and blog with gardening information.
As a parent you’ve gotta love a book your kids want to read AND that is actually teaching them important stuff!!!
Herbert Peabody and His Extraordinary Vegetable Patch was released 1 May RRP $18.95 (AU)
